Hasan Raja holds a distinct and subtle radiance in the vast sky of Bengali spiritual music. Born on 21 December 1854 in Lakshmanshree village on the banks of the Surma in Sunamganj, into a wealthy zamindar family, he spent his life searching for inner truth and emerged as a mystic sage, poet and philosopher.
The expansive wetlands and rivers, along with the colourful horizons shaped by the hills of Meghalaya, seemed to be the birthplace of his songs. Sunamganj is still known as the land of Hasan Raja, yet the city observes neither his birth nor death with major ceremonial events, as solitude appears to have been his closest companion.
During his lifetime, Hasan Raja composed nearly 200 songs, expressing humanism, longing for unseen love, and deep devotion to the Creator in simple language. After Lalon Shah, he was among the foremost figures who profoundly merged music with Bangladesh’s philosophical consciousness.
Rising above all religious and social divisions, he sang the songs of humanity. Songs such as “Sona bondhe amarey dewana banailo”, “Matir pinjorar majhe bondi hoiya”, and “Morile hoibo matitey basha” are not merely songs, but spiritual reflections and windows beyond life and death.
World poet Rabindranath Tagore admired his talent. In 1925 in Kolkata and later in 1933 during the Hibbert Lectures in London, Tagore spoke highly of two of Hasan Raja’s songs, showing how deeply his art could touch the human heart.
Yet today, the institutional practice of his music and philosophy remains limited. Hasan Raja, however, remains an invaluable treasure of folk heritage and one of the deepest expressions of the Bengali soul.
On 6 December 1922, the mystic sage quietly departed from this world. His songs and philosophical messages continue to flow like a river, calling people to return to their inner selves and discover the divine melody within the scent of the soil.
With humble respect to poet Hasan Raja, whose songs still move the human soul to tears.
