Independence Day Celebrated Nationwide

Today, 26 March marks Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day, observed across the country with deep respect, solemnity and a strong sense of national pride. The day commemorates the historic beginning of the nation’s armed struggle for independence, which followed the brutal crackdown of 25 March 1971. On the morning of 26 March, the call for resistance was sounded, and the long and bloody Liberation War officially began. After nine months of intense sacrifice, marked by the loss of an estimated three million lives, Bangladesh achieved its long-awaited independence on 16 December 1971.

The day has been declared a public holiday, with state institutions, educational establishments and diplomatic missions observing a range of commemorative programmes. Special tributes have been paid by the country’s highest office holders. The President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, and the Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, extended warm greetings to Bangladeshis at home and abroad, urging unity and renewed commitment to national progress.

In his message, the President emphasised that independence remains the nation’s greatest achievement. He paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War, including freedom fighters, tortured mothers and sisters, and all those who contributed to the struggle. He highlighted that the core aspirations of independence—political and economic freedom, social justice, and human dignity—must still be fully realised. He also called for transparency, accountability and good governance across all sectors, urging collective efforts to build a secure and prosperous future for the next generation.

The Prime Minister echoed similar sentiments, noting that Independence Day renews the spirit of courage, sacrifice and patriotism. She stressed that the original goal of the liberation movement was to establish a democratic, peaceful and equitable society. Emphasising national unity and tolerance, she urged citizens to contribute to the country’s development from their respective positions, fostering a progressive and dignified Bangladesh.

Across the country, celebrations began at dawn with ceremonial gun salutes. National flags were hoisted at all government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions, as well as at Bangladesh missions abroad. One of the most significant moments of the day will be the laying of wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar by the President and Prime Minister, followed by tributes from freedom fighters, dignitaries and foreign diplomats.

A range of organised programmes has been arranged nationwide. These include parades, cultural events, discussions, and competitions in schools and colleges. Television and radio stations are broadcasting special programmes highlighting the Liberation War, while public exhibitions and film screenings are being held to educate younger generations about the nation’s history.

The evening will feature a grand cultural programme on Manik Mia Avenue, showcasing performances by the armed forces orchestra alongside popular music groups, further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.

Educational institutions are hosting competitions, debates and artistic events, while museums remain open to the public. Religious institutions across the country are holding special prayers, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity and national harmony.

The day also carries a humanitarian dimension. Special meals have been arranged in hospitals, prisons, orphanages and elderly care homes, ensuring that vulnerable groups are included in the national celebration.

In addition, the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has organised commemorative programmes, including a wreath-laying ceremony at Savar and an evening discussion and cultural performance at the National Theatre Hall, underscoring the role of art and culture in preserving the nation’s memory of independence.

As the nation reflects on its past, today’s observance serves as both a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and a reminder of the ongoing responsibility to uphold the values of freedom, justice and unity.
