Independent Vice-President (VP) candidate Shamim Hossain has announced that if he does not secure victory in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, he will return his focus entirely to his academic pursuits.

The declaration came through a Facebook post from his personal account at 11:45 pm on Wednesday (9 September).

In his message, Shamim wrote: “Whatever the result, whoever becomes VP will have my full support. If they require my assistance in any matter, I will extend it, InshAllah.”

He further added: “If I am not elected VP, from tomorrow I will return to my study desk. This will mark the end of my political journey.”

Shamim’s candidacy had already attracted significant attention among students for its unconventional approach. Unlike mainstream candidates, he avoided microphones, large banners, or expensive posters. Instead, he chose to:

  • Engage students directly in conversation,
  • Visit classrooms and libraries to seek support,
  • Campaign under the banner of students’ rights and transparent politics.

This humble and personal style resonated with a section of the student body. Many expressed on social media that Shamim represented a refreshing alternative to traditional student politics.

Student Reactions

  • Admiration for simplicity: His straightforward language and humble behaviour inspired many.
  • Perception of integrity: Students noted that as an independent candidate, he carved out a distinct identity in an arena dominated by established organisations.

As the official results faced delays, the campus atmosphere became tense, with rumours circulating rapidly on social media.

In this environment, Shamim’s calm and positive statement provided a sense of reassurance to many students, easing anxieties and offering a constructive outlook despite uncertainty.
