The excitement surrounding the India-Pakistan match in the Asia Cup has yet to subside. Now, the two teams are set to meet once more on the cricket field. On Sunday, 5 October, India will face Pakistan in a Women’s Cricket World Cup match.
India’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, has expressed her desire to approach the match like any other: “We grew up watching India-Pakistan matches. We have always wanted to be part of this contest. I view this match like any other. Our focus remains on cricket.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s captain, Fatima Sana, has been reflecting on memories of past encounters.
In the Asia Cup, the Indian team has not yet exchanged handshakes with Pakistani players in the three matches played so far. Whether a handshake will take place in the women’s World Cup match remains uncertain. When asked about this during a broadcaster interview, Harmanpreet emphasised the sporting focus of the Indian team.
Smriti Mandhana highlighted the unique atmosphere of an India-Pakistan encounter: “The environment in an India-Pakistan match is always intense. The stadium is usually packed. From morning, everyone you meet encourages you to win. This kind of atmosphere brings out the best in us. My teammates and I enjoy it thoroughly.”
India’s bowling coach, Aviskar Salvi, stated that players have been instructed not to display excessive emotions during the match: “In cricket, focus comes first. We want the girls to perform at their best. We are treating this match like any other. The World Cup is long, and there are many matches ahead.”
On the other hand, Fatima Sana, Pakistan’s captain, is approaching the match with a lighter perspective, recalling friendships from earlier encounters: “We maintain good relations with all other teams and try to stay friendly with everyone. We will play respecting the cricketing culture and traditions in every possible way.”
