India has reaffirmed its support for inclusive and democratic elections in Bangladesh, while also expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, particularly the safety of minorities.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a weekly briefing on Friday, underscored India’s position: “We support a stable, peaceful, inclusive, and progressive Bangladesh in which all issues are resolved through democratic means and by holding inclusive and participatory elections.”
Jaiswal highlighted the alarming number of violent incidents in Bangladesh, citing over 2,374 cases reported between August 5, 2024, and February 16, 2025. However, according to him, Bangladeshi authorities have only verified 1,254 of these incidents, with 98% categorized as “political in nature.”
“We expect Bangladesh to thoroughly investigate and bring all perpetrators of killings, arson, and violence to justice without making such distinctions,” Jaiswal said.
The MEA spokesperson also raised concerns over the release of “violent extremists” convicted of serious crimes, saying this has further destabilized the law and order situation.
“We have repeatedly underlined that it is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect the Hindus and other minorities, as well as their properties and religious institutions,” Jaiswal said.
Addressing the formation of a new political entity, the National Citizen Party (NCP), in Bangladesh, Jaiswal reiterated India’s position on fostering democracy in Bangladesh. He stressed the need for stability, peace, and inclusivity in the political process, aligning with India’s broader vision for its neighbor.
