India Preserves Honour in Final Match

Published: 19 Feb 2026, 09:22 am

India confirmed their place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup with an assured victory over the Netherlands in Ahmedabad. Having already sealed the Group A top spot, the final group-stage encounter was largely a formality, yet India displayed clinical execution to win by 17 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Electing to bat first, India posted a competitive total of 193 for six in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was propelled by a destructive knock from Shivam Dubey, who scored 66 off just 31 deliveries, including four fours and six sixes. Despite losing early wickets, India managed to accelerate in the middle overs, with crucial contributions from Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya.

In response, the Dutch innings never truly gained momentum. Openers Michael Levit and Max O’Dowd offered resistance, scoring 24 and 20 respectively, but failed to establish a substantial partnership. Colin Ackermann and Aryan Dutt attempted to steady the innings, but their 43-run stand was cut short. Varun Chakraborty’s brilliant spin in the 13th over removed both batsmen in consecutive deliveries, while Dubey accounted for Bas de Leede, the top scorer for the Netherlands with 33 runs from 23 balls. The lower order could only reduce the margin of defeat as the Netherlands were eventually dismissed for 176.

Chakraborty finished with impressive figures of 3/14 in three overs, while Dubey claimed two wickets to complement his batting heroics. Aryan Dutt and Bas de Leede were the most economical for the Netherlands, though unable to prevent defeat.

India’s innings was not without early setbacks. Opening batsman Abhishek Sharma endured a frustrating start, dismissed for a golden duck for the third consecutive match—a rare and unwanted record in World Cup history. Ishan Kishan contributed 18 off seven balls, but early losses left India at 51/2 after the powerplay. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma added 30 runs for the third wicket, but the key partnerships came from Dubey and Hardik Pandya, who stitched together a 76-run fifth-wicket stand to take India past 190.

With this victory, India will face Group One runners-up South Africa, Zimbabwe, or West Indies in the Super Eight stage. On Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav’s men will open their Super Eight campaign against the formidable Proteas.
