Indian Cricket Board Decision: Mustafiz Excluded from IPL

Bangladesh’s star pacer, Mustafizur Rahman, was slated to represent Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise secured his services at the IPL auction in December, paying a record ₹9.2 crore, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.

However, escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh have now led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene. In a significant move, the board has instructed KKR to exclude Mustafizur from their squad and explore alternative options.

Speaking to Asian News International (ANI), BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said, “Given the recent developments, the BCCI has directed the KKR franchise to release their player, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, from the squad. If KKR wishes to sign a replacement, the board will permit the substitution.”

Initially, the BCCI had adopted a “wait and observe” approach regarding Mustafizur’s participation. However, political pressure and controversy surrounding his inclusion ultimately compelled the board to take decisive action.

The decision comes after criticism of KKR’s franchise owner, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, from various political and religious figures in India. An Uttar Pradesh BJP leader publicly labelled him “anti-national,” while several spiritual leaders also voiced their opposition to Mustafizur’s participation.

Despite the setback, KKR’s investment in Mustafizur highlighted his rising stature in T20 cricket. At the December auction, the franchise spent ₹9.2 crore to secure him, a figure unprecedented for a Bangladeshi cricketer in the IPL. His pace, skill, and consistency in limited-overs cricket had made him a highly sought-after asset for franchises across the tournament.
