India’s Tejas fighter jet crashed during an air show in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. On Friday, the jet’s sole pilot lost his life in the incident.
The crash occurred while performing stunts in front of spectators at Al Maktoum International Airport. The moment of the crash was captured on camera by a person named Abu Bakr.
According to the media outlet NDTV, just before hitting the ground, the Tejas aircraft executed a ‘negative G’ turn, a manoeuvre or combat stunt. The pilot then rolled the jet in mid-air. However, the aircraft was flying very low, and the roll was not performed rapidly or with a sharp motion. As a result, the jet could not stabilise and crashed to the ground.
Video footage shows that the aircraft lost some altitude during the stunt. After rolling, it descended faster than normal, which contributed to the crash. Upon impact, fire broke out in the single-seat lightweight fighter. The pilot was unable to escape in time and tragically died inside the aircraft.
The Tejas fighter is manufactured by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Before this incident, only one other Tejas aircraft had ever crashed.
