Invitation Dispute Sparks Clash in Titash

A violent altercation erupted in Titash Upazila, Comilla, following an iftar gathering organised by supporters of Mohammad Osman Gani Bhuiyan, the president of the local BNP unit. The confrontation reportedly arose over the alleged exclusion of certain guests from the event, leaving at least four people injured.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening at Bhuiyan’s residence in Machhimpur village, shortly after the iftar feast. Local police, upon receiving reports, promptly arrived at the scene and detained a man identified as Robin in connection with the clash.

The injured have been identified as Mohammad Talim, Mah Alam, Mohammad Mukbul, and Mojibur Rahman. Following the scuffle, local residents rushed the victims to the Titash Health Complex for treatment. Mojibur Rahman’s injuries were deemed serious enough to require transfer to Dhaka for advanced medical care.

In response to the incident, Tofazzal Hossain filed a lawsuit naming seven individuals as defendants.

Sequence of Events

According to police and local sources, the iftar gathering was organised under the initiative of Osman Gani Bhuiyan’s supporters. The dispute reportedly began when Anisur Rahman, organisational secretary of Kalakandi Union BNP, allegedly attacked Tofazzal Hossain, claiming he was a “broker” for the ruling Awami League and had not been invited. A physical confrontation ensued between the parties, resulting in injuries on both sides.

Tofazzal Hossain, the complainant, stated, “The organisers had invited me to the iftar, so I attended out of social courtesy. While speaking with BNP leader Gazi Hanif after the meal, Anisur Rahman approached and assaulted me, calling me an Awami League agent. When my relatives tried to intervene, they were also beaten, sustaining serious injuries.”

Efforts to contact Anisur Rahman for comment were unsuccessful; he reportedly ended the call upon learning the caller was a journalist.

Titash police inspector (investigation) Mofizul Islam said, “Upon receiving reports of the clash in Machhimpur, we immediately arrived and brought the situation under control. One individual was arrested on the spot and later sent to prison through the court on Friday morning. The law and order situation in the area is currently normal.”
