IPL Chairman Expresses Regret Over Mustafizur Exclusion Issue

The chairman of the Indian Premier League, Arun Dhumal, has publicly expressed regret over the controversial exclusion of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from last season’s tournament, bringing renewed attention to a decision that strained cricketing relations in the region.

Mustafizur, widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s premier pace bowlers, had been the sole Bangladeshi player picked during the December auction, securing a lucrative contract worth INR 9.5 crore with Kolkata Knight Riders. However, in a surprising turn of events, the franchise released him just a month later in January, reportedly following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Breaking his silence in an interview with the Financial Times, Dhumal described the episode as “unfortunate,” while admitting limited knowledge of the underlying details. “I would simply say that it is regrettable. Beyond that, I do not have much information,” he remarked.

Expanding on the broader implications, Dhumal suggested that cricket administration should ideally remain insulated from external influences. “It is indeed unfortunate. Sometimes such situations arise. I do not believe there should be any government interference in the day-to-day functioning of cricket. Governments generally support the sport, but occasionally circumstances emerge that influence decisions. I am confident that, in future, reason and sound judgement will prevail, and such incidents will not recur,” he added.

The decision to release Mustafizur triggered a sharp response from the Bangladesh Cricket Board, which formally protested against the move. Tensions escalated further when Bangladesh announced a boycott of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The BCB cited security concerns, stating that the national team would only participate if matches were relocated outside India.

Despite Bangladesh’s appeal, the International Cricket Council declined to alter the tournament arrangements. Consequently, Bangladesh forfeited its place in the competition, and Scotland national cricket team was named as the replacement—an outcome that underscored the seriousness of the standoff.

Meanwhile, Mustafizur has continued his professional commitments in the Pakistan Super League, where he is currently representing Lahore Qalandars. Signed for INR 6.44 crore, the left-arm pacer has delivered a commendable start to his campaign, showcasing both control and effectiveness.

In his opening two appearances, Mustafizur has claimed two wickets while maintaining an impressive economy rate of 4.87, reflecting his continued value in the shortest format of the game. His ability to restrict runs, particularly during high-pressure overs, remains a key asset for his franchise.

The controversy surrounding his IPL exclusion has raised broader questions about governance, player rights, and the intersection of sport and politics. While Dhumal’s remarks signal a conciliatory tone, the episode has left a lasting impression on regional cricket dynamics.

As Mustafizur continues to perform on the international franchise circuit, observers will be keen to see whether future IPL seasons adopt a more inclusive and transparent approach—one that ensures talent is prioritised above external considerations.
