IPL Franchise Offers Lucrative Deal to Two Australian Cricketers to Skip International Cricket

Two prominent Australian cricketers, Pat Cummins and Travis Head, who play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and remain regulars in the national team, were reportedly offered a lucrative proposal to prioritise IPL over international cricket.

IPL Auction and Retention Details

Player 2024 IPL Auction Price Previous Retention Price
Pat Cummins ₹20.5 crore ₹18 crore
Travis Head ₹6.8 crore ₹14 crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad reportedly offered both Cummins and Head ₹58 crore per year to play not only in the IPL but also in other T20 leagues associated with the franchise across the world.

According to Australia’s The Age:

  • Both players would have to forego international cricket for Australia.
  • They would be required to play year-round for the franchise in multiple leagues globally.

However, both Cummins and Head rejected the offer, stating that representing Australia remains their top priority.

Future of Big Bash League

The Australian Big Bash League (BBL) may undergo decentralisation, potentially moving towards private ownership of teams.

  • Such a shift would increase investment behind each team.
  • Player salaries are expected to rise, attracting more domestic and international cricketers to participate.

Discussions regarding this potential restructuring have reportedly taken place among Cricket Australia, provincial boards, and the players’ association.

This development highlights the growing influence of franchise T20 leagues on player commitments and the balancing act players face between lucrative contracts and national duty.
