Iran Executes Three Over Police Killings

Iran has executed three individuals found guilty of killing police officers during anti-government protests earlier this year, the country’s judiciary announced on Thursday.

According to reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), the unrest began in late December of last year as demonstrations against rising living costs. What initially started as peaceful protests quickly escalated into a nationwide movement challenging government authority, reaching a critical peak on 8 and 9 January.

The judiciary’s Mizan Online website stated, “This morning, three individuals found guilty of murder and carrying out operations in favour of Zionist rule and the United States during the unrest in January were executed.” The three were reportedly involved in the killing of two law enforcement officers. They were sentenced to death after being found guilty of “Moharebeh,” or waging war against God, a capital offence under Iranian law.

Iranian authorities claim that while the protests began peacefully, they were later incited by foreign interference and degenerated into riots involving killings, arson, and vandalism. Tehran has acknowledged that the unrest resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 people, including security personnel and innocent bystanders, describing the violence as “terrorist acts.”

In contrast, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates that more than 7,000 individuals lost their lives during the protests, the majority of whom were demonstrators. HRANA also warned that the actual number of fatalities could be significantly higher, as many deaths may have gone unreported.

The protests and subsequent crackdown have sparked international attention and criticism. Observers highlight concerns over human rights violations, the use of the death penalty for political unrest, and discrepancies in official casualty figures. The executions come amid ongoing tensions within Iran over economic hardship, political freedom, and international relations.

The following table summarises the key figures related to the unrest and judicial actions:

Category Figure / Detail
Start of protests Late December 2025
Peak unrest dates 8–9 January 2026
Individuals executed 3
Charges Murder of police officers, Moharebeh (waging war against God)
Government-reported deaths 3,000+ (security personnel and civilians)
Human rights estimate 7,000+ (mostly protesters)
Nature of unrest Demonstrations escalated into riots and violence

The executions and the broader crackdown remain a flashpoint for discussions on governance, public dissent, and accountability in Iran. International human rights groups continue to call for transparent investigations into both the deaths during the protests and the legal proceedings that followed.
