Iran Extends Access to Airspace for Overflights Following Ceasefire

TEHRAN, 28 June 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Iran has extended international access to its airspace for overflights following a recent ceasefire agreement with Israel. However, substantial flight restrictions remain in place across several regions of the country, a senior official confirmed on Saturday.

Majid Akhavan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, announced that:

“In addition to the eastern half of the country’s airspace being available for domestic, international and overflight operations, the airspace over the central and western parts of the country has now also been opened only for international overflights.”

This development follows Iran’s decision to fully close its skies on 13 June, in response to a series of Israeli airstrikes that triggered retaliatory missile attacks from Iran. The complete shutdown lasted for nearly two weeks.

Current Airspace Status

Region Airspace Status Flight Types Allowed
Eastern Iran Open Domestic, international, overflight
Central Iran Open International overflight only
Western Iran Open International overflight only
Northern Iran Closed None
Southern Iran Closed None
Tehran Airports Closed (Mehrabad and Imam Khomeini) None

Airports Currently Operational

Despite the continued restrictions, certain airports have resumed operations. These include:

  • Mashhad Airport (Eastern Iran)
  • Chabahar Airport (Southeast Iran)

Mashhad, notably claimed by Israel as a strike target during the hostilities, is now functioning again for both domestic and select international operations.

Public Advisory and Travel Guidance

Spokesman Akhavan urged the public to avoid travelling to airports in the north, south, and west of the country:

“All fellow citizens are requested not to go to airports located in the northern, southern and western regions of the country.”

He further stressed the importance of relying solely on official channels for travel and airspace updates.

Timeline of Events

Date Event
13 June 2025 Iran shuts down entire airspace following Israeli airstrikes
26 June 2025 Eastern airspace reopens after ceasefire
28 June 2025 Central and Western airspace reopened for overflights only

Ceasefire Context

The move to reopen sections of Iranian airspace comes after a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel concluded with a ceasefire. The conflict had significantly disrupted regional aviation and caused international concern regarding the safety of commercial air routes.

As of now, flights in many regions remain suspended until further notice, and the situation remains under continuous review by aviation authorities.
