Iran is ready for war: Araghchi

Iran is fully prepared for military confrontation should the United States seek to test its capabilities, the country’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has warned. In a special interview with Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera Arabic on Monday, 12 January, Araghchi emphasised that Tehran remains ready for any scenario, including direct conflict.

Araghchi highlighted that while diplomatic channels with Washington remain open, Iran has significantly enhanced its military readiness since last June, when it faced potential hostilities involving the United States and Israel. “If Washington chooses to test our military strength—as it has attempted before—we are fully prepared,” he said. “I hope the United States will choose dialogue wisely rather than confrontation.”

The minister also issued a stern warning to those encouraging the United States to intervene militarily for Israel’s benefit, underscoring that such actions would carry serious consequences.

On the domestic front, Araghchi addressed the ongoing protests across Iran, noting that armed extremists have infiltrated the demonstrations. “These individuals have attacked both demonstrators and security personnel,” he said.

The protests, which began on 28 December, represent the largest anti-government movement in Iran since 2022. Originally sparked by rising inflation and economic hardship, the unrest has quickly taken on a political character, with demonstrators calling for the resignation of the current regime. The demonstrations have now spread across multiple cities, with participants demanding significant political reforms.

In recent days, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened intervention in Iran, signalling readiness to assist demonstrators and warning Tehran against using force against protestors. “The United States stands ready to support those fighting for their rights,” Trump stated last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged on Sunday to reform the country’s economic policies and reiterated that his administration remains attentive to the concerns of the population.
