Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply following a threat from US President Donald Trump to target Iranian energy facilities if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened by Monday, 23 March. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and armed forces issued a detailed warning, outlining potential retaliatory measures against any attacks on its electricity and energy infrastructure.
In a televised address, Brigadier General Ebrahim Jolfagari, spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, labelled President Trump a “terrorist” and emphasised that the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian control. He stated that, while certain navigation remains permitted under strict security regulations, Iran would not hesitate to take decisive action to protect its national security and strategic interests.
He warned:
“Should the United States carry out its threats against our power plants and energy installations, Iran will respond with firm and proportional measures.”
General Jolfagari outlined the specific actions Iran could undertake in the event of an attack on its energy infrastructure. These measures, which target both regional and international interests linked to the United States, include:

Iranian officials cautioned that such actions could plunge the entire region into widespread power outages.
Analysts note that Iran’s outlined responses reflect a strategy of deterrence and asymmetric retaliation, signalling that attacks on Iranian energy assets would have immediate consequences beyond national borders. The IRGC’s emphasis on targeting US-linked companies and Israeli infrastructure indicates a willingness to escalate conflicts in response to perceived existential threats.
