The Iran Football Federation has initiated discussions with football’s global governing body, FIFA, regarding the potential relocation of its World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico. This was confirmed yesterday by the federation’s president, Mehdi Taj.
The move comes in the wake of remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump last week, in which he stated that while Iran could participate in the World Cup, playing on U.S. soil might pose risks “to their own life and security.” The veiled warning has prompted Tehran to take immediate action to safeguard its national team.
Speaking at the Iranian Embassy in Mexico City, Taj made it clear:
“When the President himself admits he cannot guarantee the safety of our national team, we will under no circumstances travel to the United States. We are in talks with FIFA to arrange for Iran’s matches to be held in Mexico.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to commence on 11 June, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. According to the current schedule, Iran is set to play two group-stage matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. However, escalating tensions in the Middle East have cast doubt on the feasibility of these fixtures.
Recent developments, including U.S. airstrikes in coordination with Israel and the resulting death of a top Iranian leader, have heightened security concerns. In light of these events, Iran’s Minister of Sports indicated last week that travelling to the United States to compete would now be virtually impossible. Questions have emerged over whether Iran will participate at all if the venues are not moved.
Despite the uncertainties, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) remains optimistic about Iran’s participation. At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, AFC Secretary-General Windsor John stated:
“Ultimately, it is the federation’s decision. Based on what we have been informed, we understand that Iran intends to participate in the World Cup.”
The table below summarises Iran’s group-stage matches and potential venue adjustments:
| Date | Original Venue | Opponent | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 June | Los Angeles, USA | Team A | Security concerns may prompt relocation |
| 18 June | Los Angeles, USA | Team B | Discussions ongoing with FIFA |
| 22 June | Seattle, USA | Team C | Mexico venue proposed as alternative |
The ongoing geopolitical tensions and the unprecedented nature of these venue relocation discussions make Iran’s World Cup campaign highly uncertain. FIFA’s response to the federation’s proposal will likely set a precedent for how security concerns are addressed in future tournaments.
With the clock ticking towards the tournament’s opening, both football authorities and fans are awaiting a resolution that balances safety and the integrity of the competition.
