The death toll from the ongoing mass protests in Iran has surged to at least 3,090, according to a report released on Saturday, 17 January, by the international human rights organisation HRAA. Of those killed, 2,885 were active participants in the demonstrations, while 155 were civilians not directly involved and 50 were members of the security forces.

Human rights advocates report that large-scale protests have subsided in several cities due to aggressive government crackdowns and military-security operations. State media has confirmed that authorities have intensified arrests and heightened security measures in response to the unrest.

Residents of Tehran and northern cities along the Caspian Sea have described a relative calm on the streets. Although drone surveillance continues over the capital, no major demonstrations were observed on Thursday or Friday.

The protests began on 28 December as demonstrations against the country’s worsening economic crisis. They quickly escalated to demands for the end of the Islamic Republic’s rule. Analysts consider this wave of unrest the most severe internal instability Iran has experienced since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Internet Access and Communications
Internet monitoring group NetBlocks reports that following nearly 200 hours of network shutdown, connectivity saw a modest improvement on Saturday morning. However, only two per cent of normal traffic levels have been restored. Iranians abroad have indicated that they were able to communicate with domestic users in a limited manner early in the day.

Analysts warn that despite the partial reopening of social media and communication channels, ordinary citizens remain heavily restricted in accessing information and sharing updates. The international community is now closely monitoring the human rights situation and the government’s heavy-handed response. Experts caution that the combination of political unrest and humanitarian pressures could escalate further if not addressed.

The unfolding crisis highlights Iran’s deepening internal challenges, with both domestic stability and international attention hanging in the balance.
