Iran has officially suspended visa-free entry for citizens of India, citing concerns over human trafficking through employment schemes. The announcement was made on Monday evening by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the statement, several Indian networks have been involved in human trafficking in Iran, luring individuals with false promises of employment. In response to repeated incidents, the Iranian government has decided to revoke the visa-free entry facility for all Indian nationals.
The new policy will come into effect on 22 November, requiring all Indian citizens wishing to enter Iran to obtain a visa in advance. The Ministry emphasised that the move aims to prevent the misuse of visa-free entry privileges and strengthen border and immigration controls.
Experts suggest the change could have a significant impact on tourism, short-term work assignments, and business travel between the two countries. Many Indian nationals who previously relied on visa-free access for short visits or employment opportunities will now face stricter regulations and processing requirements.
While the Iranian authorities maintain that the measure is primarily aimed at combating illegal activity, it may also encourage more formal and secure channels for labour migration and international travel. Observers note that this step reflects Iran’s increasing focus on border security and human trafficking prevention.
