Iran has officially unveiled a newly constructed underground missile base, signalling a significant enhancement of its military capabilities. Analysts suggest the move is a clear strategic message amid ongoing tensions with the United States. The announcement was made on Wednesday, 4 February, by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Major General Abdul Rahman Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Brigadier General Saeed Majid Mousavi, head of the IRGC Aerospace Division, alongside several senior military commanders. During the inspection, officials reviewed the base’s infrastructure, missile deployment systems, operational readiness, and rapid response capabilities.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of Staff emphasised Iran’s preparedness to counter any potential threat. He stated, “Following the twelve-day conflict with Israel last June, we have fundamentally restructured our military strategy. Moving beyond a purely defensive posture, we are now simultaneously enhancing both offensive and deterrent capabilities.” He added that the focus has shifted towards conducting large-scale rapid operations, employing asymmetric warfare tactics, and neutralising adversaries’ modern military plans efficiently.
Experts note that underground missile bases have long been integral to Iran’s defensive doctrine. Typically built in mountainous or heavily fortified subterranean locations, these facilities provide protection against aerial strikes and missile attacks while enabling rapid missile launches, complicating the adversary’s ability to plan pre-emptive actions.
Meanwhile, the United States has recently deployed additional warships, aircraft carriers, and troops in the surrounding region. Although diplomatic discussions between the two nations have been scheduled, international observers warn that the risk of military confrontation cannot be entirely dismissed if negotiations falter.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also cautioned that a direct US attack on Iran could trigger a large-scale regional conflict, further heightening insecurity across the Middle East.
The table below summarises the strategic characteristics of Iran’s underground missile facilities:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Location | Mountainous or deep subterranean areas |
| Primary Purpose | Protection from aerial and missile attacks |
| Strategic Advantage | Covert deployment and rapid launch capability |
| Military Significance | Demonstrates both deterrent and retaliatory capacity |
| Regional Impact | Complicates adversaries’ strategic calculations |
Overall, the unveiling of this missile base represents more than the launch of a military installation; it serves as a statement of Iran’s strategic posture, its regional power balance, and a clear signal to the United States and Western powers.
