Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, has expressed uncertainty over whether Iran will participate in the upcoming World Cup in the United States. The recent military strikes by the United States and Israel have created an unpredictable environment, he stated.
In an interview with sports portal Varzesh Three, Taj remarked, “Following these attacks, it is unrealistic to expect optimism from our side regarding the World Cup. The governance of the United States has inflicted harm on our homeland. This action will not go unanswered.”
Speaking on Iranian state television, he added, “After the recent US strikes, it is unlikely that we can fully focus on the World Cup. Those responsible for overseeing sports will make the final decisions on participation.”
The attacks continued in Iran for a second consecutive day on Sunday. Many analysts believe that the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has introduced a period of profound uncertainty over the future of the Islamic Republic. This instability has heightened risks across the broader Middle East region.
Currently, Iran is observing a 40-day period of national mourning following Khamenei’s death. During this period, no matches will be held, resulting in the suspension of domestic leagues and World Cup preparation matches. This interruption is expected to significantly affect team readiness.
In retaliation for the US and Israeli strikes, Iran has launched attacks not only against Israel but also on several Middle Eastern countries hosting US military bases, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar.
The escalating tensions across the Middle East have affected multiple sports, including football, cricket, Formula One, and MotoGP. Consequently, doubts have arisen about whether Iran will ultimately be able to compete in the World Cup. Previously, the Trump administration had imposed travel restrictions on Iranian citizens entering the United States.
Iran is placed in Group G for the tournament. The team is scheduled to play its first match against New Zealand in California on 15 June. Their second group match will be against Belgium on 21 June at the same venue, followed by the final group match against Egypt in Seattle on 26 June. The World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from 11 June to 19 July.
| Date | Opponent | Venue | Match Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 June | New Zealand | California | Opening group match |
| 21 June | Belgium | California | Second group match |
| 26 June | Egypt | Seattle | Final group stage match |
The uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation highlights the profound impact of geopolitical tensions on international sport, leaving fans and officials alike awaiting clarification.
