The recent escalation of hostilities following joint military operations by the United States and Israel in Iran has rapidly intensified, extending far beyond the Middle East. Key military installations in Tehran and other strategic locations have become primary targets, while attacks have also been reported in Israel and Cyprus. Observers note that the conflict is no longer confined to the region but is increasingly affecting areas closer to South Asia.
On Wednesday, a significant naval incident occurred off the southern coast of Sri Lanka when an Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, was struck by a torpedo reportedly launched from a US submarine. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 80 crew members, with 68 reported missing and 32 rescued. The vessel had 180 personnel on board. The United States has acknowledged responsibility for the strike.
In retaliation, Iran launched multiple counter-attacks. Missile strikes targeted the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and a drone attack occurred at the US Consulate in Dubai. Meanwhile, Hezbollah attacks in Israel injured at least two military personnel, illustrating the widening scope of the confrontation.
The cumulative toll of these exchanges is mounting rapidly. According to reports from the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim, the death toll has reached 1,045 as of Wednesday. The United Nations expressed “deep concern” following the deaths of 160 children in a school in southern Tehran.
Domestic developments in Iran reflect the turmoil. The funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been postponed, and discussions have emerged about his potential successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, who faces threats from Israeli forces.

The conflict is affecting global commerce as well. Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, detaining nearly 200 oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, including 60 supertankers carrying roughly 8% of the world’s crude oil, triggering significant market volatility.
Iran has declared that it has no intention to negotiate with the United States and is prepared for a prolonged conflict. NATO and local military forces have intercepted multiple missile and drone attacks, including the destruction of an Iranian ballistic missile over Turkish airspace by NATO defence systems.
The crisis continues to reverberate across the international stage, with both regional security in South Asia and global energy markets increasingly at risk. Unless diplomatic interventions succeed, the conflict threatens serious consequences for international security, trade, and economic stability.
