Iraq Heads to Mexico for World Cup Play-Off

Despite ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Iraq is set to participate in the play-off round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After several days of uncertainty, the Iraq Football Association confirmed on Sunday that the national team will travel to Mexico. According to the schedule, Iraq is slated to face the winner of the Bolivia–Suriname encounter on 31 March.

Adnan Dirjal, president of the Iraq Football Association, stated, “By the end of this week, our national team will depart for Mexico. A private aircraft has been arranged to transport the players.” He further explained, “We have coordinated with the clubs where our national players are currently contracted to ensure they can join the national team at the designated time.”

Ongoing hostilities in Iraq have prevented the team from holding a domestic training camp. Complicating matters further, head coach Graham Arnold has been stranded in the United Arab Emirates due to a suspension of regular air travel. In response, Iraq has sought FIFA’s assistance to facilitate training sessions and logistical support upon arrival in Mexico.

Approximately 60 per cent of the Iraqi national team’s players compete for domestic clubs, which made it impossible for many to attend the previously planned training camp in Houston. The disruption posed significant challenges for coach Arnold in preparing the squad for the crucial play-off match.

Iraq’s last appearance at a FIFA World Cup main tournament was in 1986. Since then, the team has been striving to return to the world stage, making this play-off tie an important opportunity to re-establish themselves in international football.

The table below summarises Iraq’s play-off details and preparation status:

Despite the logistical hurdles and security concerns, the national team remains committed to performing at their best. With FIFA’s support and careful coordination with clubs, Iraq aims to present a competitive squad capable of progressing to the 2026 World Cup proper. Football enthusiasts across the country are watching closely, hopeful that the team can overcome these extraordinary challenges and achieve a historic milestone.
