In a tournament that has been teetering on the edge of a major upset, Ireland appeared poised to finally deliver one against the former champions. However, a catastrophic batting collapse saw the Irish side surrender a dominant position, allowing Sri Lanka to escape with a deceptively comfortable 20-run victory.
After being put in to bat, Sri Lanka posted a competitive 163-6, though their total owed much to Irish generosity. The Ireland fielders endured a torrid afternoon, shelling no fewer than six catches. Kusal Mendis was the primary beneficiary, anchoring the innings with a steady, unbeaten 56 off 43 balls.
However, the real impetus came from Kamindu Mendis. Arriving at the crease in the 14th over with the score a precarious 86-4, Kamindu ended a drought of 57 balls without a boundary with a flamboyant reverse sweep. His explosive 19-ball 44—including four boundaries and two towering sixes—shifted the momentum firmly back to the Lions. His assault in the 17th over, which yielded 21 runs, proved to be the difference-maker.
Ireland’s pursuit began with purpose. At 100-2 after 13.4 overs, they were arguably the favourites. With 60 runs required from the final 36 deliveries and eight wickets in hand, the upset felt inevitable. Then, the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion.
From a position of strength, Ireland lost their final eight wickets for a mere 38 runs in just 35 balls. The Sri Lankan spin twins, Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, systematically dismantled the middle order, while Matheesha Pathirana’s slinging pace cleaned up the tail. Ireland were eventually bowled out for 143 with one ball to spare.

While Sri Lanka will be relieved to secure the points, their top-order fragility remains a concern. Ireland, conversely, will rue a golden opportunity lost not through a lack of talent, but through a lack of composure under pressure and uncharacteristically poor fielding.
The Man of the Match honours went to Kamindu Mendis, whose late-innings cameo provided the essential cushion that their bowlers eventually defended.
