Is Facebook’s Like Button Going to Be Removed?

Meta is planning significant changes to make the Facebook platform more user-friendly, and among these changes, the future of the Like button is sparking the most discussion.

Meta has announced that starting February 10, 2026, the Like and Comment buttons on external websites will no longer function. In other words, any blogs, news sites, e-commerce platforms, or other webpages that used the “Facebook Like” or “Comment” plugin will no longer have them active.

However, there’s good news for users: the Like button will remain functional within the Facebook app or website, and users will still be able to react to posts, photos, reels, or videos just as before.

Why are these external Like buttons being removed? Meta explained that this decision is part of their effort to simplify and modernize their developer tools. The plugins, which were created over a decade ago, helped increase Facebook’s presence on websites, but their usage has declined over time. The shift in data-sharing policies, stricter privacy laws, and the rise of new social media platforms have made these plugins less relevant. According to Meta, there’s no longer any real value in maintaining outdated and unnecessary tools.

It’s worth noting that the Like button, which debuted in 2009, became more than just a technological feature; it evolved into a cultural icon. The number of Likes became an essential metric for online behavior, content popularity, and brand promotion. But now, in 2025, the internet environment is vastly different. Users are spending time across multiple apps, algorithms are multifaceted, and privacy has become the focal point of technology. As a result, Facebook’s influence on the web has diminished. Meta is now focusing on tools that will add more value to future innovations, not past legacies.
