Ishrāq’s Claim: Nasiruddin Patwary Suffers from Mental Illness, Urgent Treatment Needed

Dhaka, 26 January: BNP candidate for Dhaka-6, Engineer Ishrak Hossain, has publicly labelled Naseruddin Patwari, the NCP candidate for Dhaka-8, as “mentally unfit” and stated that he requires medical treatment. The remarks came amid a heated political climate during the ongoing parliamentary election campaigns.

Speaking to the media on Monday morning while engaging in electioneering activities in the Sutrapur area, Ishrak expressed strong criticism of Patwari’s recent public statements. The controversy stems from Patwari’s speech at a political rally on Sunday at Dhupkhola Maidan in Old Dhaka, where he urged voters to pass judgment against local extortionists and landlords.

Ishrak described Patwari’s choice of language as “objectionable” and “offensive,” insisting that he should apologise publicly. He further asserted that such statements reflected signs of mental instability, adding that Patwari required professional psychiatric attention.

“This is indicative of mental disorder. He needs treatment and should also be educated on political courtesy and the appropriate language to address opponents,” Ishrak said.

Highlighting his own stance on democratic principles, Ishrak emphasised that the ultimate authority lies with the electorate. “We firmly believe that the power to decide rests in the hands of the people. Through a fair and impartial election, citizens will determine the outcome. We have full confidence in the people’s judgement,” he stated.

Addressing the broader electoral environment, Ishrak noted that, so far, the situation across Dhaka and other parts of the country has remained largely calm. Nevertheless, he warned that provocative or indecent remarks from certain individuals were creating discomfort among voters and urged all political actors to maintain peace and decorum.

He also suggested that Patwari’s party should consider taking internal disciplinary action, including the possibility of revoking his candidacy, if he fails to apologise publicly.

Earlier on Monday, Ishrak participated in a meeting organised under the banner of doctors, officials, and staff of Dhaka National Medical College and Hospital. There, he reaffirmed his commitment to universal healthcare, pledging reforms and improvements in public medical services.

Ishrak’s election campaign is scheduled to continue throughout the day in various areas of Sutrapur, engaging directly with local voters.
