JERUSALEM, February 23, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – The Israeli army has announced an escalation of military operations in the occupied West Bank, including the deployment of a tank division in Jenin. This marks the first use of tanks in the Palestinian territory since the conclusion of the Second Intifada in 2005.
A statement issued by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday confirmed that the IDF, Shin Bet (Israel’s security agency), and border police have intensified their counterterrorism operations in northern Samaria (West Bank). The statement further specified that the deployment of a tank division in Jenin is part of a broader offensive strategy aimed at countering perceived threats in the region.
The city of Jenin has long been a flashpoint for Israeli-Palestinian tensions, often witnessing clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militant groups. The last significant tank deployment in the West Bank was during the Second Intifada (2000–2005), a period of intense violence that saw large-scale military incursions by Israel, including the 2002 Battle of Jenin.
In recent months, Israel has stepped up military operations across the West Bank, citing concerns over rising militancy and security threats. The move to deploy tanks raises fears of further escalation and could trigger increased resistance from Palestinian factions in the area.
The announcement comes amid a wider surge in violence between Israelis and Palestinians, with frequent military raids, airstrikes, and armed clashes contributing to an increasingly volatile situation. Palestinian officials have condemned Israel’s actions, warning that such escalations could lead to further unrest and instability in the region.
As tensions mount, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging restraint and calling for renewed efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
