Israel Threatens Large-Scale Attacks in Southern Lebanon

Israel has threatened to carry out extensive military operations in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah, accusing the powerful armed group of attempting to reorganise itself. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued the warning, claiming that Hezbollah is “playing with fire” once again.

In a statement released on Sunday, 2 November, Katz said: “Hezbollah is playing with fire, and the President of Lebanon is involved. The Lebanese government had promised to disarm Hezbollah and remove them from the border. They must honour this commitment. The highest measures will be taken against them, including intensifying attacks. We will not allow any threats to Israel’s northern regions.”

The warning followed an Israeli strike in Lebanon on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of four people.

Hezbollah, in solidarity with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, began sporadic attacks along Israel’s border in October 2023, escalating into full-scale conflict by mid-2024. During that period, Israel reportedly killed most of Hezbollah’s senior leadership, including its former chief Hassan Nasrallah.

The violence also claimed the lives of numerous civilians. A ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel was established in November last year, but attacks in various parts of Lebanon have continued and remain ongoing.

Last week, Israeli forces reportedly carried out a raid in Lebanon, targeting a house and killing a government employee. In response, the Lebanese President instructed the military to prevent any further incursions by Israeli forces into Lebanon.
