Israeli Airstrikes Kill 31 in Lebanon

At least 31 people have been killed and a further 149 injured following a series of Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The strikes, which took place on Monday, mark one of the deadliest escalations in recent months amid heightened regional tensions.

The bombardment reportedly targeted positions associated with Hezbollah in several parts of the country, including the capital, Beirut. Lebanese health authorities confirmed the casualty figures, stating that emergency services remain engaged in rescue operations and the treatment of the wounded.

According to reports by Al Jazeera, powerful explosions were heard in the southern suburbs of Beirut, particularly in the district of Dahiyeh, widely regarded as a stronghold of Hezbollah. Witnesses described repeated waves of airstrikes, with Israeli warplanes conducting sustained bombardment over several hours.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said the strikes were carried out in response to what it described as a major rocket attack launched by Hezbollah towards northern Israel. The military asserted that it had targeted Hezbollah infrastructure “across Lebanon” and vowed to prevent the group from posing what it termed a threat to the Israeli state.

“The organisation will not be permitted to establish any threat against the State of Israel,” the statement read, adding that the response would be “firm and forceful”.

The escalation follows claims by Hezbollah that it had targeted a military base in the Israeli city of Haifa. The group stated that the attack was carried out in retaliation for what it described as Israeli actions linked to threats against Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The precise circumstances surrounding those claims remain unclear.

Medical facilities in Beirut and other affected areas have reportedly been placed on high alert. Ambulances were seen transporting casualties from damaged neighbourhoods, while residents fled targeted districts amid fears of further attacks.

The latest exchange represents a significant intensification of hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon frontier, where cross-border fire and retaliatory strikes have periodically erupted. Analysts warn that continued escalation could risk drawing wider regional actors into the conflict, further destabilising an already volatile situation.

International observers have expressed concern over the mounting civilian toll and urged restraint from all parties. Diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation are believed to be under way, though no immediate breakthrough has been announced.

As the situation remains fluid, both sides appear poised for further confrontation, raising fears that the violence may expand beyond its current scope.
