Italy created cricketing history by securing their first-ever victory in a World Cup appearance. In only their second match on the global stage, the Italians dominated Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, winning by 10 wickets. Chasing a modest target of 124, Italy reached the mark in just 12.4 overs, leaving no doubt about their authority on the day.
The stars of the match were the Mosca brothers, Justin and Anthony, who opened the innings and led the charge with clinical batting. Justin remained unbeaten on 60 off 44 balls, hitting three towering sixes, while Anthony, also not out, scored 62 from just 32 deliveries, smashing six sixes in an explosive display. Their partnership ensured Italy’s innings remained unbroken and efficient, bringing up 100 runs in just 10.5 overs. Justin had already reached his half-century in 37 balls, and Anthony achieved his fifty in a mere 28 balls, showcasing their remarkable strike rate and composure under pressure.
Nepal, who had impressed in their opening match against England, struggled to cope with Italy’s bowling attack. After winning the toss and opting to field, Italy bowled out Nepal for 123 in 19.3 overs. At 13.4 overs, Nepal were 93 for 3, seemingly on track for a competitive total. However, leg-spinner Krishan Kalugamage triggered a collapse by dismissing Dipendra Singh Airee, conceding just 18 runs in 4 overs while taking three wickets. Off-spinner Ben Manenti also impressed with economical bowling, taking 2 wickets for 9 runs in 4 overs.
Arif Sheikh top-scored for Nepal with 27 runs, followed by captain Rohit Paudel with 23. As the Mosca brothers ran through the target, Italy reached 50 in just four overs, and their dominance only grew from there, reaching 68 during the powerplay. The partnership between the brothers not only ensured victory but also sent a clear statement about Italy’s arrival on the world stage.

Italy’s triumph is a historic milestone, marking their first-ever World Cup win. The seamless combination of disciplined bowling and explosive batting has set a benchmark for the team, signalling their potential to compete at the highest level. Meanwhile, Nepal will have to regroup and reflect on what went wrong after a promising start, as Italy’s precision and power proved too much for them to handle.
