Allegations by Jamal Hossain
Jamal Hossain stated:
“My father, late Motiur Rahman, bought this land in 2003. We had planted trees there and planned to build a home. But in the early hours of 11 July, my cousin Abdus Salam arrived with men, took control of the land, and even built a structure overnight. They cut down the trees we had planted.
I’ve now filed five complaints, but no help is forthcoming as Salam is backed by Jamaat and is using his political influence to intimidate us. I’m being openly threatened and am not allowed to enter my own property.”
Counterclaim by Accused’s Family
Although Abdus Salam Azadi himself could not be reached for comment, his son Md Mujahid responded:
“Jamal Hossain and his people have occupied our land elsewhere. Since they are not vacating that land, we’ve built a house on theirs. If they leave our land, we will vacate theirs.”
Police Response
Sub-Inspector Idris Ali, the investigating officer from the Metropolitan Airport Police Station, Barishal, commented:
“A mediation meeting regarding the complaint was scheduled. However, due to our involvement in a high-profile murder case within the station’s jurisdiction, it was postponed. We will proceed with a proper investigation in due course.”
The incident highlights ongoing land disputes in rural Bangladesh, particularly where political affiliations are used to exert pressure or influence outcomes. The local administration is being urged by residents and civil society representatives to ensure impartial investigation and protection for landowners facing political intimidation.
