In a shocking act of violence in Patharghata, Barguna, a local Jamaat leader was brutally assaulted by unidentified assailants, leaving him severely injured. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, resulted in serious injuries to both of his legs, as well as wounds to his left arm and head. The incident took place near Bayar Khuti Bridge, adjacent to Kathaltali Dakhil Madrasa.
The victim, Mahfuzur Rahman, serves as the Amir of Ward 9 in Kathaltali Union and is also the head of the Ibtedayee section of Kathaltali Dakhil Madrasa. According to Sharif Abdur Rahman, the madrasa’s superintendent, Mahfuzur Rahman sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.
According to sources at the madrasa, Mahfuzur Rahman had left the madrasa at around 1:00 pm, travelling home by motorcycle. Upon reaching Bayar Khuti Bridge, three young men reportedly attacked him. Rafiqul Islam, a junior moulvi who was accompanying him at the time, witnessed the assault.
Sharif Abdur Rahman, citing Rafiqul Islam’s account, told reporters that as soon as Mahfuzur Rahman reached the bridge, the attackers struck him with sticks and iron pipes, forcibly throwing him from his motorcycle. They then repeatedly assaulted his legs, causing fractures, and also inflicted blows to his forehead and left arm. Local residents promptly came to his aid, transporting him to Patharghata Upazila Health Complex for immediate medical attention.
Dr Mahmudul Hasan, a physician at the health complex, confirmed that Mahfuzur Rahman had suffered severe leg injuries and head trauma. He advised that the victim be referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
The officer-in-charge of Patharghata police station, Mungchhela, stated that the authorities were aware of the incident and would take action once an official complaint was lodged.
