Jamalpur Land Dispute Verdict Delivered

A Bangladeshi court in Jamalpur has delivered its long-awaited judgment in a murder case stemming from a land-related dispute, sentencing two individuals to death and three others to life imprisonment over the killing of farmer Akhtar Hossain, aged 45, in Dewanganj upazila.

After years of judicial proceedings, Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 of Jamalpur, presided over by Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin, announced the verdict on Wednesday afternoon, bringing closure to a case that has remained in the legal system for nearly 18 years.

According to court records, the fatal incident occurred on the night of 22 May 2007 in the village of Sabujpur. The dispute, rooted in a longstanding conflict over land ownership and boundary demarcation, gradually escalated into hostility between rival groups. What began as a civil disagreement ultimately culminated in a premeditated attack.

Prosecutors stated that at approximately 8:30 pm, Akhtar Hossain was lured near an মাঠ adjacent to his home under false pretences. There, a group of assailants surrounded him. In the ensuing attack, he was stabbed in the abdomen with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex, where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Following the incident, the victim’s son, Saiful Islam, filed a murder case at Dewanganj Police Station, naming four accused and including several unidentified individuals. After extensive investigation, charge framing, witness testimonies, and cross-examinations, the court found six individuals guilty and delivered its verdict accordingly.

The court sentenced Motaleb Hossain and Rashid Jamal to death, while Abdul Latif, Suruj Mia, and Abdul Hamed were each awarded life imprisonment. Among them, Rashid Jamal and several others are reported to be members of the same family. Motaleb Hossain remained absconding at the time of sentencing, while the remaining convicts were present in court.

Convicted Persons and Sentences

Name Sentence Status
Motaleb Hossain Death penalty Absconding
Rashid Jamal Death penalty Present in court
Abdul Latif Life imprisonment Present in court
Suruj Mia Life imprisonment Present in court
Abdul Hamed Life imprisonment Present in court

State prosecutor Didarul Islam told reporters that the prosecution successfully established the case as a planned and coordinated killing based on witness testimony and circumstantial evidence. He added that the verdict sends a strong message against violent escalation of land disputes and reinforces public confidence in the justice system.

Locals in Dewanganj have expressed mixed reactions, with many viewing the ruling as a long-overdue measure of justice for the victim’s family. However, some tension remains in the area, and authorities are reportedly maintaining a cautious watch to prevent any potential unrest following the verdict.

The case underscores how unresolved land disputes in rural regions can escalate into serious violent crimes when mediation and timely legal intervention fail to resolve underlying tensions.
