James Concert in Faridpur Aborted Following Violent Unrest

A high-profile musical performance by the legendary rock icon James was brought to an abrupt and violent halt on Friday night at Faridpur Zilla School. The event, organised to commemorate the school’s 185th anniversary and grand reunion, descended into chaos when thousands of external spectators, unable to gain entry to the exclusive grounds, launched a coordinated barrage of stones and brickbats at the stage and audience.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 pm at the historic Zilla School premises. According to the organising committee, the cultural evening was strictly intended for registered former and current students. However, news of the “Nagar Baul” frontman’s arrival acted as a magnet, drawing an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 unauthorised individuals to the surrounding Mujib Road.

Escalation and Casualties

In an attempt to appease the swelling crowds outside, the committee installed two large digital projectors on the perimeter. This gesture failed to pacify the mob; frustrated by the lack of physical access, hundreds attempted to scale the school’s boundary walls. When security personnel intervened, the outsiders began hurling projectiles over the walls into the densely packed assembly of alumni.

The ensuing violence resulted in injuries to approximately 25 to 30 individuals, including the Convenor of the Organising Committee, Mostafizur Rahman Shamim. Several victims required immediate hospitalisation. Tensions peaked when a small group of outsiders managed to breach the perimeter, leading to brief physical altercations with Zilla School students before security forces could regain a semblance of control.

Cancellation and Security Response

Recognising the imminent threat to public safety and the artist’s security, Benazir Ahmed Tabriz, a member of the Security Sub-committee and an alumnus, took to the stage just before 10:00 pm to officially terminate the event. “The safety of our guests and students is paramount. Given the relentless rain of bricks from outside, continuing was impossible,” he stated during the announcement.

Mohammad Shahidul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station, noted that the sheer volume of the crowd made it physically impossible to accommodate everyone within the school’s courtyard. He described the situation as a “significant breach of order” triggered by the immense popularity of the performer. While the police managed to disperse the mob eventually, the gala reunion, which was meant to be a historic milestone for the institution, ended in disappointment and injury for the registered attendees.
