The Jamuna Bridge witnessed a substantial surge in vehicle crossings during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, with toll collection reaching an impressive Tk 17.65 crore over eight days. This increase reflects the usual peak in traffic that occurs on the nation’s major bridges during festive periods.
From 16 March to 23 March, a total of 254,175 vehicles traversed the bridge, prompting a significant rise in toll revenue compared to typical daily collections. Authorities had prepared for the holiday rush by setting up 18 toll booths, including two dedicated booths on each side for motorcycles, ensuring smoother passage for all commuters.
The daily vehicle movements and toll collections over the eight-day period are summarised in the following table:
| Date | Vehicles Crossed | Toll Collected (Tk) |
|---|---|---|
| 16 Mar | 35,658 | 2,94,70,700 |
| 17 Mar | 46,938 | 3,49,83,650 |
| 18 Mar | 51,592 | 3,51,73,650 |
| 19 Mar | 45,633 | 3,12,00,000 |
| 20 Mar | 16,961 | 1,23,65,450 |
| 21 Mar | 13,910 | 61,03,300 |
| 22 Mar | 18,337 | 1,04,57,950 |
| 23 Mar | 25,146 | 1,45,28,250 |
| Total | 2,54,175 | 17,65,62,800 |
According to Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin, traffic flow during the Eid period was relatively smooth. “Except for the day before Eid, there were no significant traffic jams. People were able to travel home comfortably, and the expected congestion did not materialise,” he said.
The rise in toll collection this year mirrors a broader trend observed during Eid, when passenger vehicles, buses, and motorcycles increase dramatically as citizens travel to their hometowns to celebrate with family. Efficient planning, including separate lanes for motorcycles and multiple booths, contributed to a seamless flow despite the high number of crossings.
Authorities have emphasised that the Jamuna Bridge remains a critical artery for intercity travel, especially during national festivals, and that ongoing infrastructure improvements aim to accommodate increasing traffic while minimising delays.
Overall, the eight-day Eid period demonstrated effective traffic management and highlighted the bridge’s pivotal role in national mobility.
