Japan Closes Afghan Embassy in Tokyo

Japan has officially suspended the operations of Afghanistan’s embassy in Tokyo, marking a significant step in the ongoing diplomatic uncertainties surrounding the Taliban-led government in Kabul. The announcement was made on Saturday, 31 January, by Afghanistan’s ambassador to Japan, Shida Mohammad Abdali, via a statement on the social media platform X.

In his message, Abdali expressed his deep regret over the closure, stating, “With a heavy heart, I am leaving Tokyo.” He confirmed that all activities of the Afghan embassy in Japan have been formally halted as of that day.

Until its closure, the embassy had served as the primary channel for official diplomatic communication between Afghanistan and Japan. It also provided a range of consular services for Afghan nationals residing in Japan, including the issuance of passports, visas, and other essential documentation.

The suspension reflects a broader trend that has emerged since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Across the world, numerous Afghan embassies have either closed or significantly scaled back operations. Many diplomats appointed under the previous Afghan government were dismissed, while several missions experienced temporary management changes due to political and administrative pressures.

Japan, like most countries, has not formally recognised the Taliban government. Its engagement with Afghanistan remains largely confined to humanitarian assistance and limited diplomatic channels, avoiding official recognition of the current regime.

The embassy closures have sparked growing concern over the ability of Afghan expatriates to access essential consular services abroad. According to data compiled since 2021, more than a dozen Afghan diplomatic missions worldwide have been shut down or had their operations curtailed, leaving citizens abroad with reduced support.

Status of Afghan Diplomatic Missions Since 2021

Country Embassy Status Reason for Closure/Reduction
Japan Closed Political and administrative pressures
United States Limited operations Non-recognition of Taliban government
United Kingdom Limited operations Security and political considerations
Germany Closed Diplomatic uncertainties
France Limited operations Administrative challenges
Canada Closed Political non-recognition

The closure of the Tokyo embassy highlights the continuing fragility of Afghanistan’s foreign diplomatic network and raises pressing questions about how Afghan nationals overseas will secure passports, visas, and other urgent consular services in the absence of formal representation.
