Japan has officially restarted the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear facility in the world, following a temporary suspension caused by a minor technical fault. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which operates the plant, confirmed in a statement that operations resumed at 2:00 pm local time on Monday at its Niigata Prefecture site.
Earlier this year, in January, TEPCO attempted to bring one of the plant’s seven reactors online for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima disaster. However, the initiative was abruptly halted due to an alarm triggered by a monitoring system. TEPCO has since addressed the issue, ensuring the reactor meets stringent safety standards.
The Fukushima accident, caused by a devastating earthquake and tsunami, resulted in the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, prompting Japan to sharply curtail nuclear power generation. Since then, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility has remained largely idle. Nevertheless, growing concerns over fossil fuel dependence, rising electricity demand driven by technological growth, and Japan’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 have reignited interest in nuclear energy.
Prime Minister Sanaye Takaichi, who recently secured a decisive victory in the country’s national elections, has voiced strong support for the renewed use of nuclear power, citing its importance in sustaining economic growth and energy security.
TEPCO officials explained that during the initial January start-up, a minor change in electricity flow through a cable caused the alarm to activate. Although the deviation was within safe limits, the reactor was shut down as a precaution. Following adjustments to the alarm settings and comprehensive safety checks, the reactor has now been deemed fit for operation.
According to TEPCO, a second round of full-scale inspections is scheduled, after which the plant is expected to commence commercial electricity production on or after 18 March 2026.
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, with its seven reactors, is a cornerstone of Japan’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while meeting the country’s growing energy needs. Its restart signals a cautious but significant shift back towards nuclear energy, reflecting both domestic policy priorities and the broader global focus on sustainable power generation.
The following table summarises key details of the facility:
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Niigata Prefecture, Japan |
| Operator | Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) |
| Total Reactors | 7 |
| Reactor Restarted | 1 |
| Initial Restart Attempt | 21 January 2026 |
| Issue Causing Suspension | Minor electrical flow variation triggered alarm |
| Safety Status | Reactor now cleared for safe operation |
| Expected Commercial Operation | On or after 18 March 2026 |
Analysts have noted that the plant’s reopening could have far-reaching implications, not only for Japan’s energy policy and climate goals but also for regional and global perceptions of nuclear energy safety and sustainability.
