Jatiya Party Cancels Anniversary Following Khaleda Zia’s Death

The Jatiya Party (JP) has officially announced the suspension of all events marking its 40th founding anniversary. The decision was made under the direction of party chairman Golam Mohammad (G.M.) Quader. Party spokesperson Shaurya Dipto Surya confirmed to reporters on Wednesday that the measure was taken in response to the death of former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Begum Khaleda Zia, one of the most influential figures in Bangladesh’s political arena, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, 30 December 2025, at the age of 78. In recognition of her contributions, the government declared three days of national mourning and announced a one-day public holiday on Wednesday.

Shaurya Dipto Surya stated, “Following the directives of the party chairman, all programmes planned for JP’s 40th anniversary on 1 January have been postponed out of respect for the period of state mourning.”

Begum Khaleda Zia’s political career spanned several decades and was marked by both resilience and diversity. She first assumed office as Prime Minister in 1991 and served three non-consecutive terms in the nation’s highest executive role. Her leadership is particularly remembered for breaking gender barriers in Bangladesh, inspiring generations of women to participate actively in politics.

The following table summarises the key facts surrounding her passing and the national response:

Subject Details
Date of Death 30 December 2025, early morning
Age 78 years
Political Titles Former Prime Minister; BNP Chairperson
State Mourning 3 days
National Holiday 1 day
Jatiya Party Response All 40th anniversary programmes suspended

The passing of Begum Khaleda Zia casts a profound shadow over Bangladesh’s political and social landscape. Various political parties are arranging memorial gatherings, condolence meetings, and commemorative events to honour her legacy. By suspending its annual celebrations, JP has demonstrated its respect for national mourning.

Citizens, political leaders, and public figures across the country are paying tribute to her leadership and lifetime achievements. During the official mourning period, governmental and private institutions have postponed or cancelled meetings, events, and cultural activities. Analysts predict that over the coming days, the political, social, and cultural environment of the country will remain subdued and reflective, providing space for the nation to collectively honour the memory of one of its most prominent leaders.
