Jhenaidah BNP Rejects Rashed Khan’s Nomination and Workshop

The political landscape in Jhenaidah has been thrust into turmoil following the controversial decision by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leadership to nominate Rashed Khan for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency. Mr Khan, the former General Secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, only recently defected to the BNP, a move that has sparked immediate and fierce internal resistance. In a significant act of defiance, the Jhenaidah district unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP, has officially announced a total boycott of a scheduled electoral workshop. This day-long training session, which was slated to take place on Monday, 29th December, has been indefinitely postponed by the student leaders as a direct protest against what they term an “imported candidacy.”

Mousum Uddin Shovan, the Member Secretary of the Kaliganj Upazila Chhatra Dal, confirmed the boycott late Sunday evening. He articulated the deep-seated resentment felt by grassroots activists, emphasizing that Rashed Khan has been entirely absent from the party’s long and arduous struggles over recent years. According to local leaders, the nomination of an individual who is not a resident of the Kaliganj area is viewed as an affront to the dedicated local cadres. The protesters argue that the leadership has ignored three formidable local aspirants who have consistently risked their safety for the party’s cause, opting instead to “impose an outsider” upon the electorate.

The backlash has not been confined to mere verbal protests or workshop cancellations. The scenes on the ground in Jhenaidah have been dramatic and highly charged. In a striking display of disillusionment, several activists, including prominent members of the Jubo Dal (the party’s youth wing), were seen performing symbolic acts of penance, such as holding their ears and pledging to quit BNP politics entirely. Furthermore, groups of enraged party workers took to the streets clad in traditional funeral shrouds (Kafan cloth), signifying their readiness to sacrifice everything to oppose the nomination. The local leadership has issued a stern ultimatum: unless Rashed Khan’s nomination is rescinded immediately, the party will face a wave of mass resignations that could cripple its electoral prospects in the region.

Adding to the controversy is the logistics of Mr Khan’s candidacy. Documents suggest that he is a resident of Muraridah village in Jhenaidah Sadar, rather than the Kaliganj Upazila which falls under the Jhenaidah-4 seat. On Saturday, he reportedly filed an application to transfer his voter registration to Kaliganj in a bid to legitimise his run. This move has only served to further alienate the local base, who view the registration transfer as a cynical ploy. As the central leadership in Dhaka faces this escalating crisis, the unity of the BNP in Jhenaidah remains precarious, with the grassroots making it clear that they will not accept a candidate who has not “earned his stripes” through local struggle.
