Jennifer Jimenez, band director at South Miami Senior High School, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Music Educator Award, presented in partnership with the Grammy Awards. Selected from a nationwide pool of more than 2,000 nominees spanning all 50 states, Jimenez emerged victorious after months of rigorous evaluation, ultimately standing out among ten distinguished finalists.
The Music Educator Award is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honours in American arts education. It recognises teachers who have made a measurable and transformative impact on students’ musical development and personal growth. Jimenez’s selection reflects nearly two decades of steadfast commitment, artistic excellence and community engagement in South Miami.
“I am deeply humbled to represent music educators across the country who work tirelessly every day,” Jimenez said following the announcement. “This recognition shines a light not only on my work, but on the extraordinary students and colleagues who make our school community so special.”
Now in her 19th year at South Miami Senior High, Jimenez has built a programme distinguished by discipline, creativity and ambition. Under her direction, the Cobra Band has flourished both competitively and artistically. Her insistence on high standards has led to landmark performances at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall and appearances at two editions of the Super Bowl — achievements that underscore the ensemble’s national stature.
Beyond accolades and appearances, Jimenez is known for cultivating resilience and leadership among her pupils. Colleagues note that her philosophy extends well beyond musical technique: she emphasises teamwork, accountability and confidence-building, ensuring that students leave the programme equipped for success in higher education and professional life.
In recognition of her achievement, Jimenez received a $10,000 honorarium, alongside a matching $10,000 grant designated for the school’s music programme. These funds are expected to enhance instrumental resources, expand performance opportunities and support student scholarships.
Jimenez is also a previous finalist for the Music Educator Award and a recipient of the Kennedy Center Sondheim Inspirational Teaching Award, distinctions that further attest to her national standing within arts education.
Her triumph was mirrored by a strong showing from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), which celebrated five quarterfinalists in the initial Grammy selection process. The district’s representation highlights the depth of musical talent and pedagogical excellence across its institutions.
| Educator | School | Recognition Stage |
|---|---|---|
| Oliver Diez | Palmetto Elementary | Quarterfinalist |
| Dr Janet Duguay-Kirsten | Dante B. Fascell Elementary | Quarterfinalist |
| Cindy Ellis | Miami Arts Studio 6–12 at Zelda Glazer | Quarterfinalist |
| Jim Gasior | New World School for the Arts | Quarterfinalist |
| Jennifer Jimenez | South Miami Senior High School | Winner |
District leaders described Jimenez’s award as emblematic of the calibre of instruction available throughout M-DCPS schools. Her accomplishment not only elevates South Miami Senior High School’s profile but also reinforces the vital role of music education in shaping well-rounded, aspirational young people.
As celebrations continue across the district, Jimenez’s success stands as a powerful testament to the enduring value of arts education — and to the transformative potential of a teacher who dares her students to aim high and perform even higher.
