In a significant blow to the capital’s criminal underworld, a special joint task force led by the Bangladesh Army has apprehended Mehedi Hasan, alias Dipu, a high-ranking associate of the notorious "top terrorist" Subrata Bain. The operation, which took place in the Bepari Para area of Middle Badda, uncovered a staggering cache of sophisticated weaponry hidden within a residential flat.
Acting on precise intelligence, the joint forces stormed a third-floor apartment owned by Mehedi Hasan. The sheer volume of firepower recovered has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the militarisation of Dhaka's gangland factions. According to Assistant Commissioner Asaduzzaman of the DMP’s Badda Zone, the raid yielded 11 high-calibre foreign firearms and nearly 400 rounds of ammunition.
Inventory of Seized Items:
Firearms: 11 sophisticated foreign pistols and 1 Uzi machine gun rifle.
Ammunition: 394 rounds of live ammunition and 32 cartridges.
Tactical Gear: 10 specialised magazines (8 for pistols, 2 for the Uzi), 2 walkie-talkies, and pistol holsters.
Melee Weapons: 3 Chinese hatchets and a "Tiger Hunting" commando knife.
Technology: 1 laptop, currently being audited for criminal data.
For years, Dipu has acted as the "field commander" for Subrata Bain and Molla Masud, both of whom were detained in Kushtia last May. Following their arrest, Dipu assumed control over the lucrative crime corridors of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Badda, and Vatara.
Investigations reveal that Dipu was not merely a foot soldier but a strategic operator. He reportedly managed a network of "contract killers" and ran a sophisticated weapon-rental service, providing illicit firearms to other local gangs. His influence extended into the commercial sector, where he oversaw extortion rackets targeting car showrooms, garment factories, and the profitable "jhoot" (garment scrap) trade. Notably, he controlled a fish warehouse in Merul Badda that reportedly generated hundreds of thousands of taka in daily extortion collections.
| Name | Role/Status | Notable Allegations |
|---|---|---|
| Subrata Bain | Syndicate Chief | Currently incarcerated; formerly controlled 90s underworld. |
| Mehedi Hasan (Dipu) | Chief Associate | Arms smuggling, extortion, and coordination of hitmen. |
| Khadija Yasmin | Messenger (Daughter) | Allegedly relayed orders from her father in jail to the gang. |
| Wasir Mahmud Sayeed | Associate | Arrested for the March 2024 murder of an internet trader. |
| Golam Mortuza Babu | Arms Custodian | Currently at large; believed to be holding 13–14 further weapons. |
The police have also noted suspicious links between Dipu and local political figures, including a former ward councillor. This nexus of crime and local influence allowed the syndicate to operate with relative impunity. The group is suspected of involvement in several high-profile killings, including the murder of Jubo Dal leader Arif Sikdar in April and the fatal shooting of a businessman named Suman in front of Police Plaza last March.
Following his arrest, Mehedi Hasan was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court. While the police sought a seven-day remand to unearth the origin of the foreign weapons and identify further accomplices, Magistrate Kamal Uddin granted a five-day remand. Investigators noted that during initial questioning, the suspect provided "inconsistent and misleading" information, suggesting a deep-seated effort to protect the remaining members of the syndicate.
