Bangladesh took firm control of the Sylhet Test on the second day, closing on 338 for 1 against Ireland — a commanding position that gives them a 52-run lead. Mahmudul Hasan Joy starred with a magnificent unbeaten 169, while Mominul Haque provided strong support with 80 not out.
Ireland, who began the morning on 270 for 8, could add only 16 more runs before being bowled out for 286 within 14 deliveries. Mehidy Hasan Miraz led Bangladesh’s bowling attack with three wickets, while Hasan Murad, Hasan Mahmud, and Taijul Islam chipped in with two each.
In reply, Bangladesh’s openers got off to a flying start. Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy put together a superb 168-run stand — the team’s highest opening partnership since 2015 and the fourth-highest in their Test history. Shadman fell for 80, caught behind off left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys, but Joy continued his sublime form to register his second Test hundred.
Joy’s innings was marked by patience, composure, and elegance as he punished loose deliveries and defended solidly against the Irish bowlers. Partnered by Mominul Haque, who played with trademark calmness, Bangladesh ended the day in complete control of proceedings.
By stumps, the Tigers had stamped their authority on the match, much to the delight of the home crowd in Sylhet. With a strong platform in place, Bangladesh will now look to extend their lead further on Day Three and tighten their grip on the game.
