Justice Demanded for Murdered Student at Tejgaon College

Students of Tejgaon College in Dhaka staged a dramatic protest on Sunday morning, blocking the busy Farmgate intersection to demand justice for their murdered classmate, Sakibul Hasan Rana. The demonstration began at around 10:00 a.m., bringing traffic in and around the area to a complete standstill and causing severe congestion that left commuters and office-goers stranded for hours.

Rana’s friend, Habib Rahman, told reporters, “We demand justice for Rana’s murder. Previously, we had blocked the road and lifted the protest following assurances from authorities. Yet the identified perpetrators are still roaming freely. We will continue our movement until justice is served.”

Rahman added that, to date, only one individual has been arrested in connection with the case, despite CCTV footage clearly showing other suspects who remain outside the reach of the law.

According to police reports, the incident that led to Rana’s death occurred on 6 December last year, when a clash broke out between two groups of students at the college dormitory. Rana, an 18-year-old Higher Secondary second-year student, sustained serious injuries during the altercation. He was admitted to a hospital in Mogbazar and, after four days of treatment, succumbed to his injuries on 10 December.

The students’ protest highlights growing frustration over delayed justice and concerns about safety on campus. Local residents and commuters expressed their exasperation at the resulting traffic chaos, but sympathised with the students’ demand for accountability and law enforcement action.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, though public sentiment indicates that many believe the process has been slow and insufficient. The incident has sparked debates over student safety, the accountability of law enforcement, and the need for swifter judicial proceedings in cases of violent crimes within educational institutions.
