Justice Prevails: 650 Reinstated as Sub-Inspectors and Sergeants

In a landmark decision for the nation’s law enforcement sector, the Minister for Home Affairs, Salahuddin Ahmed, has announced that approximately 650 Sub-Inspectors (SIs) and Sergeants, whose appointments were unceremoniously cancelled in 2006, are set to be reinstated. The Minister shared this development on Monday, 23 February, following a high-level security meeting with the heads of various law enforcement agencies at the Secretariat.

A Two-Decade Quest for Restitution

The origins of this legal and administrative saga date back to 2006, when these candidates were finalising their induction into the police force. Despite receiving final recommendations for appointment, their recruitment was abruptly rescinded due to the shifting political tides of the era. For nearly twenty years, these individuals have navigated a labyrinth of legal challenges to reclaim their professional standing.

Minister Ahmed highlighted that the files had recently reached a bottleneck at the Chief Adviser’s Office. “Their documentation was pending for some time, and for reasons unknown, it had not yet received the final seal of approval. However, I can confirm today that they shall receive justice. Their reinstatement is in strict accordance with standing court rulings,” the Minister stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the rule of law.

Strengthening the Thin Blue Line

The reinstatement of these seasoned candidates comes at a critical juncture as the Ministry seeks to bolster the ranks of the police force. During the briefing, the Minister also identified significant vacancies at the grassroots level, stressing the need for rapid recruitment to ensure public safety.

Recruitment Category Current Status / Requirement
SIs & Sergeants (2006 Batch) Reinstatement approved following court mandate.
Constable Vacancies 2,701 positions currently unoccupied.
Urgency Level Immediate/Emergency recruitment required.
Primary Objective Restore administrative justice and enhance regional security.

Warnings Against Political Interference

In a stern message directed at local political influencers and vested interest groups, Salahuddin Ahmed issued a “zero-tolerance” warning against obstructing police duties. He emphasised that the force must be allowed to operate with professional autonomy to regain the trust of the citizenry.

“No individual or entity shall be permitted to interfere illegally in the operations of the police,” the Minister declared. “Should anyone attempt to hinder or exert undue influence over law enforcement officers, immediate and stringent legal action will be initiated against them.”

This move is widely seen as an attempt to depoliticise the police force and provide closure to hundreds of families who have faced financial and social hardship since the 2006 cancellation. The Ministry is expected to issue formal joining letters shortly, marking the end of one of the longest-running employment disputes in the history of the Bangladesh Police.
