The Tahirpur police have apprehended another fugitive in connection with the horrific torture of an orphaned teenager who was falsely accused of stealing a silver anklet. The suspect, identified as Tarikul Islam, was arrested following a series of co-ordinated raids. On Thursday, Tarikul was presented before the Sunamganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, where the presiding judge ordered him to be remanded in judicial custody.
Tarikul is the son of Amir Uddin, the primary accused in the case, who was previously arrested and sent to jail. The police are now intensifying their efforts to track down the remaining suspects involved in an incident that has sparked widespread outrage across the region.
The victim, Hafiz Uddin, a teenage boy from Puran Laurghor who earns a meagre living by collecting coal, stones, and firewood from the Jadukata River, fell prey to a vigilante mob on Monday evening, 29 December 2025. Alleging that Hafiz had stolen a silver anklet belonging to Amir Uddin’s young daughter, a group led by Amir forcibly abducted the boy and confined him within a local shop.
What followed was a night of medieval brutality aimed at coercing a confession. According to case files and local sources, the assailants used needles to pierce the sensitive flesh beneath Hafiz’s fingernails and toenails. The torture escalated as they used pliers to crush his fingers and inflicted repeated beatings across his body. Reports indicate that the youth lost consciousness at least twice. In a display of profound cruelty, the attackers allegedly poured ice-cold water from a refrigerator onto his open wounds to revive him and continue the interrogation.
