A fresh debate has erupted across India after Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut spoke openly about gender discrimination within Indian society. Her pointed comments suggest that, despite showcasing a progressive façade, many educated and outwardly modern families—including those connected to the film industry—still harbour a hidden preference for sons over daughters. The actor’s remarks have since become a major talking point both online and in the media.

Speaking in a recent interview, Kangana argued that this bias is not confined to a particular class or community. “You may speak to families across Asia, from every social and economic background, and you will hear the same underlying concerns about a child’s gender,” she said. She further added that the bias becomes most apparent when a family welcomes a daughter first, and a second daughter arrives thereafter. “People insist that they see sons and daughters as equals, but the quiet disappointment cannot be ignored,” she noted.

According to Kangana, the same mindset exists within Bollywood households. She claimed that several actors and actresses preach progressivism publicly but privately follow conventional expectations regarding the gender of their children.

Her comments have ignited widespread reactions on social media. Many users have echoed her sentiments, sharing personal anecdotes that mirror the same patterns of subtle but persistent discrimination. One supporter wrote, “Being progressive has nothing to do with wealth or status. Even the most financially secure families pray for a son. Yet they constantly try to project themselves as modern thinkers.”
