Kate Hudson: “I Was Told I Was Too Old For Music”

LOS ANGELES – Hollywood actress and now singer-songwriter Kate Hudson has revealed that, early in her journey, she was repeatedly told she was “too old” to embark on a music career.

Hudson, 46, made her singing debut in 2024 with the release of her album Glorious, which included twelve tracks. The actress explained that she had long harboured a desire to explore music, but hesitated due to industry warnings about crossover careers.

“I always thought music would be something that I would do,” Hudson told The Hollywood Reporter. “But then it was like, ‘OK, don’t break what’s not broken.’ There’s this idea that crossing over from acting to music could be a kiss of death. You’re sort of warned against it, like ‘Just enjoy your career, enjoy this part right now.’”

Hudson recalled that in her thirties, she was explicitly told by some in the entertainment industry that she was past the ideal age to launch a musical career. “They’re like, ‘You’re kind of too old now to sort of break out as a musical act or to have a musical career,’” she said.

It was only during the COVID-19 pandemic that Hudson decided to pursue her passion without hesitation. “I thought, I will just regret it if I don’t do it. I have to do it. And so I did it,” she said. The response to Glorious exceeded her expectations. “I couldn’t believe the reception it received. It was so warm and loving. I was like, ‘Why didn’t I do this before?’”

The album, which reflects Hudson’s eclectic musical influences, was later followed by a Deluxe edition featuring two additional tracks, further showcasing her versatility and artistic range.

Glorious Album Overview

Edition Number of Tracks Notable Songs
Standard 12 “Shine On”, “Golden Hour”, “Leap of Faith”
Deluxe 14 Includes “Echoes of You” and “Sunset Dreams”

Hudson’s leap into music has drawn attention not only for her artistry but also for challenging age-related stereotypes in the entertainment industry. She hopes her story will inspire others to pursue their creative passions regardless of societal expectations or the stage of life they are in.

“Age shouldn’t be a barrier,” Hudson said. “If you love something, you should absolutely do it.”
