Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaykobad, BNP Vice-Chairman and former minister, has alleged that an advisor is attempting to establish a reign of terror in Muradnagar with support from certain factions within the police administration. His remarks were made during a recent televised interview with a private television channel.

Kaykobad, while acknowledging the sub judice nature of some of the incidents, expressed grave concerns about the current developments in Muradnagar and attributed the unrest to the involvement of Asif Mahmud, allegedly acting as an influential figure without formal political membership.

Points from Kaykobad’s Statement

Subject Details
Responsibility for Unrest Kaykobad held the police administration accountable, stating that they are acting under the influence of Asif Mahmud.
Involvement of Asif Mahmud Despite not officially joining any political party, Mahmud is allegedly operating on behalf of a party, mobilising local Awami League-affiliated miscreants.
Police Allegations The former minister claimed that the Comilla Superintendent of Police (SP) and two new OCs in Muradnagar were brought in specifically to favour Asif Mahmud.
Background of Asif Mahmud Kaykobad stated, “Asif is a mere boy. He is about the same age as my grandson. His father is or was a schoolteacher who is now doing everything possible for his son.”
Alleged Empowerment of Criminals He accused that miscreants formerly associated with the now-prohibited Awami League in the area are being empowered and allowed to return to Muradnagar, engaging in extortion, corruption, and distribution of government aid to strengthen their political grip.

Accusations of Bias and Corruption

  • Kaykobad claimed that government relief meant for the poor is being distributed primarily through individuals aligned with the alleged power group.
  • He questioned the possibility of free and fair elections under an administration that appears to openly favour one political side.
  • He drew attention to a triple murder case, labelling it as “heinous” and stating that main accused remain at large due to biased handling.

Arrests and Targeting of BNP Activists

Individual Role Allegation
Shah Alam BNP Joint Convenor Aged 70–80, was arrested and implicated in the case, which Kaykobad described as fabricated.

Kaykobad criticised police for targeting elderly BNP leaders and questioned their motives, suggesting that an independent investigation by honest officers is essential.

“If a truthful investigation is carried out, it will become clear what these police officers are doing,” he said.

Allegations Against Awami League Leadership

Kaykobad did not hold back in criticising the Awami League, accusing its past leadership of nurturing extremist elements within the party, which he believes led to the current political decay and lawlessness.

He stated:

“The miscreants have returned to the area after Asif Mahmud was made an advisor. These are the same people who fled after independence. They now speak boldly and are again active in criminal activities.”

On Judicial Integrity

Kaykobad expressed frustration over unjust legal proceedings against BNP leaders, alleging false cases are being used as tools to suppress opposition.

  • He specifically mentioned a case against a senior BNP leader, who despite securing bail from the High Court, was denied bail at the Judge’s Court.
  • He called upon judges and police officers to remember their accountability before God and warned that “those who wrongly punish the innocent will have to answer in the court of the Almighty.”

“There’s no smoke without fire. The truth is often found in the voice of the people,” Kaykobad concluded.

Summary of Kaykobad’s Allegations

Allegation Description
Political Manipulation Use of police and administration to promote an unelected advisor’s interests.
Corruption Extortion, favouritism in aid distribution, and re-empowerment of banned party miscreants.
Suppression of Opposition Arrests and false cases against BNP leaders and activists.
Judicial Bias Inconsistent bail decisions despite High Court orders.
Call to Action Independent investigations, public resistance, and exposure through media.

Kaykobad urged the media to continue investigative reporting and encouraged people to visit Muradnagar to witness the “real picture” on the ground. He stressed that unless the situation is properly investigated and addressed, such abuses of power would continue unchecked.
