Khaiyum in Focus Ahead of Cabinet Formation

As discussions intensify around the formation of the new cabinet of the Thirteenth National Parliament, attention has turned to Mr Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyum, the Member of Parliament for Rajbari-1 (Sadar-Goaland) and a central executive committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). His long-standing advocacy for the Padma Barrage and development initiatives in the south-western region has sparked renewed interest in his potential inclusion in the forthcoming cabinet.

Observers highlight Khaiyum’s pivotal role in shaping public opinion on the Padma Barrage project, widely regarded as a critical solution to persistent river erosion, agricultural challenges, and connectivity issues in the southern districts. Local residents and political commentators alike emphasise that effective implementation of such large-scale infrastructure projects requires not only political will but also hands-on experience and leadership—qualities Khaiyum is believed to possess.

Abdul Halim, a teacher from Goaland Upazila, commented, “The Padma Barrage is more than an infrastructure project; it is integral to our livelihoods. Khaiyum has played a vital role in presenting this demand at the national level. His inclusion in the cabinet would significantly ease the project’s implementation.”

Political analysts suggest that if the new cabinet prioritises regionally balanced development, Khaiyum could serve as an influential representative for the people of the Padma region. His expertise could be particularly valuable in ministries related to water resources, local government, or rural development.

Party sources indicate that the formation strategy favours grassroots-connected, development-oriented leaders with strong public engagement. Given Khaiyum’s direct involvement in the Padma Barrage campaign and consistent stance on south-western development issues, his name has naturally emerged in these deliberations.

Local communities across Rajbari and the wider south-western region have urged BNP Acting Chairman Mr Tarique Rahman to ensure that development priorities and public expectations are reflected in the cabinet. They argue that appointing Khaiyum would symbolise both recognition of local leadership and a commitment to sustainable regional development.

The anticipation now centres on one pressing question: will this leader, emblematic of south-western development, be entrusted with greater national responsibilities in the new cabinet? Time will provide the answer.
