Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia remains under intensive treatment at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after developing infections in both her lungs and heart. The veteran political leader, described by doctors as being in a critical condition, has drawn a steady stream of BNP leaders and activists to the hospital premises, where they wait anxiously for updates on her health.
During a visit to the hospital on Friday at around 11:15 pm, BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan was seen entering the facility. Vehicles carrying several other senior BNP leaders were also observed arriving throughout the night. Outside the hospital, a number of members from the party’s wings and affiliated organisations gathered quietly, expressing their concern and hoping for encouraging news from the medical team. Journalists from various media outlets were also present to monitor developments closely.
Khaleda Zia is currently receiving treatment under a medical board comprising Bangladeshi and international specialists. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefed reporters earlier in the afternoon, stating that doctors had assessed her condition as “extremely critical”. Professor Muhammad Yunus, the party’s Chief Adviser, voiced his deep concern and urged the public to pray for her recovery.
Nearly 80 years old, Khaleda Zia has long suffered from a range of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney complications. She was rushed to Evercare Hospital last Sunday after experiencing sudden breathing difficulties. Subsequent examinations confirmed infections in both her heart and lungs.
Earlier this year, on 7 January, Khaleda Zia travelled to London for advanced medical care and remained there for 117 days before returning to Bangladesh on 6 May. Since her return, she has required several hospital admissions due to recurring health complications.
