“Kidnappers demanded a ransom after abducting a young man, but were not caught by the police.”

Meherpur, Bangladesh – In a dramatic overnight operation, local police successfully rescued an 18-year-old man from his captors nearly five hours after he was abducted in Meherpur. The incident took place late on Tuesday night, highlighting both the dangers of ransom demands and the swift response of law enforcement.

The young man, Mahid Hossain, son of Amir Hossain from Babu Pur village in Mujibnagar Upazila, works as a sales representative for a pesticide company. According to reports, Mahid was kidnapped at approximately 9:30 pm from Komorpur, a locality in Mahajanpur Union, while returning home with two friends, Riyad and Junayed, after visiting a local fast-food outlet.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that as the trio were walking home, a group of unidentified individuals blocked their path. Riyad and Junayed were released shortly thereafter, but Mahid was forcibly taken and held by the kidnappers.

Amir Hossain, Mahid’s father, revealed that the abductors demanded a ransom of 30 lakh taka. “They called and insisted on 30 lakh. We immediately informed the police and sought their assistance,” he said. Fortunately, no ransom payment was made.

Police officials coordinated a careful operation, positioning multiple units near agricultural land in Tengrami, Sadar Upazila, where the kidnappers were instructed to collect the ransom. As the kidnappers attempted to retrieve the money, officers gave chase. During the pursuit, the criminals detonated a crude explosive device but ultimately abandoned Mahid and fled the scene.

Jahid Iqbal, Officer-in-Charge of Mujibnagar Police Station, confirmed that despite the successful rescue, the kidnappers remain at large. “We are continuing the operation to apprehend all members of the gang,” he said.

Police Superintendent Ujjal Kumar Roy stated that the kidnapping gang likely consisted of five individuals, all wearing face coverings, which prevented Mahid from identifying them. A formal case is being prepared at the Mujibnagar Police Station.

The dramatic recovery underscores both the risks posed by ransom-driven abductions and the effectiveness of rapid police mobilisation in rural Bangladesh.
